Kazakhstan: Heads of branches to remain Work Permit exempt

Despite last week’s announcement that heads of branches and representative offices of foreign entities in Kazakhstan will no longer be exempt from the Work Permit requirement, the government has decided to retract this announcement and the exemption will remain.

After months of push-back from foreign investors, businesses and public organisations in Kazakhstan and the government’s refusal to grant an application grace period, the government has decided to not eliminate the Work Permit exemption at this time.

What This Means for Employers and Foreign Nationals

Companies can continue to employ foreign nationals as heads of branches or representative offices of foreign legal entities in Kazakhstan without a Work Permit. Affected companies should contact their immigration professional for more information.
